Saturday, May 19th

We're home now. We got home without a hitch and everybody received their luggage. We had a little concern about the luggage because it didn't get loaded correctly in Houston and they had to unload it all, which delayed us. Other than that we had no problems. While I was sitting on the plane with Oleg and Neva, I just felt so blessed. I am looking forward to sharing that tomorrow night at OSBC.

There's something special about D'Iberville. I understand that now. I know now why people keep going back. I don't think I can put it into words, but there's a special feeling that we all have. It is good to be back home, though. It didn't feel complete without all of you there with us, but it was good knowing that we had your love and prayers and that you were cheering us on back home.

Thank you all for your support. We are anxious to give everyone hugs when we see you. I also want to thank the team for their awesomeness. I love you all.

God bless! Signing off,
Ming Ming

Thursday, May 17th

It's 6:11 pm. We are supposed to meet in the parking lot in just a few minutes to get ready to go to Tony & Coco's for dinner. Miss Ruby is making her famous catfish.

What a delight Miss Ruby is. I am so glad that I got to meet her as she was so special to the group that went last time. When you look at her, you just see love. She has been so grateful for the help that she has received in helping her to clean up her house. She has a lot of things and they have needed to be sorted and put away. Her house is really getting nice inside.

Miss Paula's house has really come along. Ed has been working so hard and has been so grateful for Tyson's ability to cut the tile. They just have a little bit more to lay and then it will be done. The kitchen looks absolutely fantastic! Great job, Ray!!! Awesome job, Wes, on the electrical. Oleg and Norm joined them this afternoon because their roof was completed and I believe they spent their time in the bathroom putting up tile around the bathtub.

Sharon's house is coming along. I went to visit it today and that's a huge job! Loran, Joanne, Dina, and Jamaul have been so hard-working. They continue to apply mud and sand.

Bob, Tommy Ann, and I ended up at Miss Ola's house. We finished up sanding, so her house is ready for painting. She is anxious to get into it.

Ron and Darian were very busy getting supplies and dealing with the flat tire on one of the vans.

D'Iberville feels like a second home to us. There have been some really awesome things that have happened. Praise God!

We look forward to seeing you all soon!!!

Wednesday, May 16

Wednesday, May 16th

7:20 pm We just finished dinner. We had burritos with brownies for dinner. It's a humid night. We had some rain today. That caused our roof team to have to move to a different job. Tommy Ann and I ended up with them in the afternoon at Miss Ola's. The team there (Bob, Oleg, Norm, Tommy Ann, and I) did drywall work, plumbing, and painting. Prior to that Tommy Ann and I finished up the work at Mr. Lepre's house. He then invited us to lunch. Yum! Fried catfish!!!

The team over at Miss Paula's is working so hard. Ed is working on the tiling, grateful for Tyson's talent with the tile cutter. Ray is working on an island in the kitchen. He worked on cabinets, countertops, and helped Wes with electrical. Wes continued on electrical and did some plumbing at Mr. Lepre's. Joanne replaced a thermostat. Alec was a tile runner and helped Ray with island construction.

The work at Sharon's continues. More drywall work. They all come back looking like ghosts covered in white dust: Jamaul, Dina, Michael, Loran.

Neva, Rose, and Hoku worked at Miss Ruby's and had a fried chicken dinner. We're jealous.

Ron drove around to various sites, bringing supplies and encouragement. Darian is busy trying to manage the project, checking on all jobs in progress, bringing supplies and tools to needed areas, making sure that things run as smoothly as possible.

We miss you all and wish you could all be here experiencing what we are. Thank you so much for your love and support!

Wednesday, May 15th

It's Wednesday morning 6:41 am. I'm sitting under our dining tent with Oleg, Loran, and Alec. Ed just walked by. Dina's going to brush her teeth.

Oleg, Bob, and Norm are the roof crew and their job is out in the boonies. They eat early so they can get going while it's still a little bit cool. Bob smashed his finger with a hammer the first day. It's a lovely shade of black and dark purple. Thankfully it has quit throbbing.

Sorry I didn't blog yesterday. It was a busy day. I ended up working a little later with Tommy Ann. We were working on Mr. Lepre's home. He is 89 years old. He lost his wife 2 months before the hurricane. There was 11 feet of water in his home. I got to hear his story of evacuation and walking through chest/shoulder high water, with water crashing over his head. His story was more graphic than the videos we have watched.

We are feeling the time crunch. That is the tough part. We want to finish some of our projects, but that's not necessarily possible.

Breakfast is almost upon us. Have a good day everybody!

Monday, May 14

Monday, May 14th

It was a hot, muggy day today. My crew was thrilled to be working in an air-conditioned home with a bathroom. Not everyone else was that fortunate. We ended up having visitors coming over for bathroom breaks.

Work in Miss Paula's house continued. Wes did some major wiring. The poor man had to be in the attic A LOT! He was in coveralls and it had to be over 100 degrees in there. Cabinet hanging continued, clearing the house of most everything so access to the floor was available, bathroom tiling completed by a previous group had to be removed, tiling began. We also delivered a range to Miss Paula's house, her very first appliance ever.

Mud was applied on Saturday in Sharon's house. Sanding occurred today. Roofing continued, too.

Housecleaning continued at Miss Ruby's. She is so happy to have the help. Parts of her home are really looking nice.

Tonight, we are running devotions. I had better sign off. Sorry there are only pictures of those who are at my jobsite. There is a lot going on at the other homes, but I have yet to receive photos from the other teams yet.

Darian says hello to his three beautiful ladies at home.

Olegs says to his family, "I love you. I miss you. I'm praying for you."

Loran wants to say thank you to all who have sent cards. Looking forward to sharing many stories with you upon my return. Please start to collect aluminum cans and to give a bag of the cans to Natalie or Loran upon his return.

MM says, "Thanks, Nadene, for taking Nolan to school!" "Love you P & J." "Love you, M & D." "Love you, J, N, L, C"

Good-night everyone! God bless you!

Sunday, May 13th evening

It was a lovely Mother's Day.

The guys sent us off to breakfast by ourselves. We had a lovely meal at Denny's while they went off to the Waffle House, where by the way, there are only 6 waffle irons! We had to wait to get a table, but while we waited a couple next to us began a conversation and told us about their experience with Katrina. They were very grateful that we were here helping.

After breakfast we broke into two groups. One went to New Orleans and the other stayed here and went to church with Ed. Rose and Dina sang in the choir at the Presbyterian church. Along the way to New Orleans, we saw some of the devastation occurred. It is still hard for me to fathrom the amount of water that came through. There is a lot of open space along the coastline. You know that the coast is always packed with buildings, everyone squeezing to be close to thewater. The coastline here is pretty bare. We only spent a few hours in New Orleans. Beignets are the draw for me.

We met the other group on the way back and stopped at the gulf and then went out for a seafood buffet dinner.

Irene shared the story of Katrina's arrival and the days following. Again, it's hard for me to fathom that degree of disaster. It always seems strange to me that one place can be suffering so much while the rest of the world just carries.

The evening ended with some of us singing. Oleg volunteered to sing and play a song for us in Russian, about a man who suffered and through his suffering came to Christ. What an amazing musician he is! It was a lovely end to our 3rd night here.

Sunday, May 13th

Happy Mother's Day! We moms all got cards, a balloon, and a rose. Thank you, men!

This is our rest day. Some of us are going to New Orleans and some of us are staying here and going to church.

It looks like it's going to be a warm day.

Have a great day, everyone! God bless you!

Saturday, May 12

Saturday, May 12th

Our team is composed of the following: Neva Trotter, Dina Louden, Rose Nanavich, Joanne, Ed, and Hoku Rodrigues, Tommy Ann and Ron Delzer, Ray Lewand, Bob Strong, Wes Mattson, Norm Fiess, Oleg Sidoronko, Michael and Ryson Fellows, Loren Inman, Darian Spence, Jamaul Lacy, Alec Kurtz, and Ming Ming Su-Brown.

Today was our first day of work. We had 4 different teams. I am with Ray Lewand’s team. It started out with Ray, Tommy Ann, Rose, Neva, Dina, Alec, and myself. We went to Paula and Stephen’s home. She was really moved to see us there and was particularly happy to see Rose and Tommy Ann. Stephen, unfortunately for us who wanted to see him, is in the Philippines. Our goal for this coming week is to make her FEMA trailer obsolete. We are going to complete her bathroom, install appliances and cabinets, and put flooring throughout. Most of the flooring was already removed. Alec, Neva, and Tommy Ann removed the double layer of laminate flooring from Stephen’s room. The installation of kitchen cabinets has begun. I was able to help Ray a little bit with that as well as measure for base molding and tiles. We were joined by Michael and Tyson who set to work installing cement board on the walls of the hall bathroom.

Joanne, Hoku, Wes, and Dina were at Sharon Fairly’s house sanding and mudding her drywall. They worked hard there and didn’t take any breaks. Hoku started her morning early with breakfast duty. It was hard for her to wake up, but once she was, she worked hard. She has also been given the duty of making lunches everyday for Darian. As one who ate lunch with Darian, I can attest that she made a really good meal for him. He kept pulling things out of his bag.

The weather was sunny and in the 80’s. Bob, Norm, Ed, and Oleg, were out in the sun working on framing a roof. Bob’s face is a little red.

Jamaul, Loran, Mike, and Tyson moved a hundred sheets of sheetrock for the second story of a home. They were quite ingenious and were able to get those sheets moved quicker than Darian expected and were ready for their next assignments. It still was hard work despite their efficiency.

Ron just spent the day visiting, basically. He went and checked out all the job sites and chatted with all the homeowners. Here he is working hard.

Ron wants me to share the story of my super-hearing! Actually, I'm going to let him tell that story himself tomorrow.

Jim Z, Rose wants me to tell you hi.

Hoku says, "Hi Grandma!"

Alec says, "Hi Jimbo & Nolan!"

Well, we love you all. We're having quite the experience here. We are grateful that you sent us.

Friday, May 11

Friday, May 11th

Well, we're here!!! Everybody has arrived safely, even Wes who decided that he couldn't travel with us and came on his own plane.

I was a little concerned this morning at 3:15am as I attempted to close my suitcase and the zipper broke! We were supposed to pick up the Fellowes at 3:30am, so needless to say I moved quickly. My husband loaned me his suitcase and we quickly moved everything over. Whew!

We all got on the plane. Jamaul did great! It was his first time on a plane.

We made our plane in Houston, though we had to move quickly and received all of our luggage without a hitch. Do you remember Norm saying that each trip keeps getting better? Well, here's Tommy Ann upgrading our transportation.

(Just kidding!)

After getting our rental vehicles, we had lunch at Burger King and then drove down the coast a bit. There's still so much that hasn't been rebuilt along the coast.

We arrived at camp

and tried to determine whether we wanted cots or mattresses on the floor. Some of us, namely Ray, found a full-size mattress, so he's going to be sleeping very comfortably tonight. All the tents have their air conditioning running, so that's very nice. It wasn't really that warm today, 80's, I think. It's cooled off nicely this evening.

Here we are getting our name badges.

A group from Pennsylvania supplied dinner for us: macaroni and cheese with ham, some cinnamon apples, salad, lemon bars.

We just had our briefing from Irene and everybody has disbursed, except for Wes who is on his thirds with dinner.

By the way, there are new washers and dryers here in the men's shower area.

Alright, I'm going to sign off before the bugs come out.

Thank you all for your support. We know that we have your thoughts and prayers. We love you all!

Wednesday, May 9

Wednesday, May 9th

Well, we leave in 2 days! I am determined to not let Satan try to foil our plans for a clean get away, though I have to laugh at some of the things that have come up that have distracted me from packing i.e. going through 2005 taxes for instance. Ugh!

Anyhow, things are moving along. Tommy Ann says that she's being a mother hen, but she has made sure that she has accounted for all her chicks and knows how they are all getting to the airport. It's going to be a very early morning for us. The bus from OSBC leaves at 4 a.m. Not very civil, is it? I'm sure that the excitement will do better than caffeine in getting us going.

I decided to add a few songs to the songsheet that Liesl had so competently typed out for the last mission trip. I'm afraid that people are going to think that we worship idols because as I read through what I typed I found, 'oru God'. I'm not sure who he is. And then some place else there was 'Praise to the Gie of good things,' so you see it's not just one strange god, but at least two! I think it's time for bed as my typing has deteriorated significantly.

Well, I made progress today. I'm not all packed, but my pink flip-flops are packed. I hear that they are a must for the shower.

Tuesday, May 8

Tuesday, May 8th

I am excited about going! Thanks, Shannon!

Our luggage tags have been found. Rides are being arranged for early transport to OSBC to pick up the bus to the airport. 70's weather has been tested, so we at least have a little bit of an idea how to dress for the warmer weather. I always forget after the long winter.

We had our commissioning at OSBC on Sunday and that was where I felt the anticipation growing. Worship was great and sitting with the group felt really good. I really enjoyed the associate pastor candidate preach and wanted to give him my vote, but I'm from New Day. I was happy to find out that he was hired.

All for now. I have to go and pack some guitar picks. I hope that guitar that Dave Hawthorne bought last time for the camp is still there.

Saturday, May 5

It's Saturday, May 5th

I can't believe that we're leaving for D'Iberville this coming Friday. I'm trying to post my first blog with the help of Mitch Wittenberg who went to Mississippi back in February. He made it seem so easy. I hope I am up for the task.

A couple of weeks ago the team went to Lowe's for a tiling class. It was interesting to me, but for many it was old hat. My son, Alec, who is 12 and went to D'Iberville back in February kept telling me to just ask him the questions as he knew the answers to my queries from his tiling experience in Mississippi.

The team also helped Marge, an older friend of Wes'. Her roof was repaired and so was a big hole in the side of her house. Here she is with Abby Spence.
Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Just last weekend, we had a barbecue at the Spence's home. It was fun and delicious. Wes made his famous banana bread and spinach salad, Ed had yummy marinated ribs, and Rose made a delicious salmon. Can't forget to mention Joanne's cheesecake! There were other delicious things, but it was a whole week ago, so you can't expect me to remember everything.

Here's Ed with Wes' banana bread!

The high today in D'Iberville was 84 and right now it's 70. Pack shorts!

I have had various people ask me whether I'm excited about going. To be honest, my reason for going at this point is to support Alec who really felt called to go back immediately upon his return from the last trip. My head knows that I am going to be so blessed for going, that I will receive wonderful gifts, but my life here is so consuming that my focus is on it and not the trip. My dear friend, Shannon, is praying that I will have that fun feeling of anticipation.

Well, it looks like I am going to close this post without a photo as I can't seem to receive my email from Imageshack with my registration information, even though I looked in my junk mail folder and everything. Good thing I will be seeing Mitch tomorrow at church. He can fix anything!

New Mission

There will be another group heading down to Mississippi this week, and they've taken over this url to blog on. If you'd like to see the old blog, head on over to http://dibervillemission3.blogspot.com.

As the date creeps closer, members have mixed feelings. Some are remembering past trips with reverence, others excited for their first time to "D'Iberville", and still others don't quite know what to expect. One member in particular, Ming Ming, is feeling the crunch.
This brave sole has taken the hefty responsibility of updating the all important "blog" to inform those back home of the goings on. Although proficient with the camera, the crucial task that is blogging looms. After a quick lesson from the previous blogger, myself Mitchell, Ming Ming has accepted the challenge. Looking forward to reading your reports, best of luck to all of you,

Mitch
